BertCode Technical Stuff

BertCode Specs.

Due to popular demand, the complete technical specification, as submitted to AIM USA for consideration as a Uninformed Symbology Specification, is printed below.

Overview

BertCode is a binary, 1-of-1 presence/absence symbology which makes use of the "defects" in conventional bar codes. Encoded using the "spots" or "voids" in D or F grade symbols (according to ANSI X3.182-1990), BertCode allows for dense packing of data without adding printing costs. If fact, the worse, the better. Figure 1 illustrates a complete BertCode symbol with finder pattern and check character.

Encodation

Patterns mean whatever you want them to, increasing reading system flexibility.

Check Character

A standard check character is used for the usual reasons.

Finder Pattern

A way cool finder pattern aids location of the BertCode symbol (see figure 1).

Tolerances

People will probably put up with it - for a little while anyway.
