  Contact Memory

Contact memory (also called button or touch memory) is a non-volatile memory chip, typically encased in metal, that can store significant amounts of data. A contact reader is used to write to, or read from, the tags. Contact memory allows data to be stored where it's needed and can travel with an item. Readers can collect this data and upload it to a host.

Contact memory devices contain no on-board intelligence. They are entirely passive and can be activated only by an appropriate reader. High data security and anti-counterfeiting capabilities are inherent in contact memory.

Contact Memory Advantages:

    • Relatively large data capacity,
    • Read/write capabilities,
    • Multiple vendors,
    • Secure data storage,
    • Provides data at point-of-use,
    • High security.

Contact Memory Limitations:

    • Cost of buttons,
    • Contact read only,
    • Proprietary technology.
