  Vision Systems

Machine vision systems use cameras to view an area and interpret symbols or shapes.

Machine vision systems are typically used to inspect goods during manufacturing or packaging. Some of the newer bar code readers (including hand-held models) are machine vision systems designed to read bar codes, two-dimensional symbols, perform OCR and even take pictures.

Machine vision systems can be used to:

    • recognize (read) characters and symbols,
    • perform quality control measurements of manufactured and machined items,
    • ensure proper operation of packaging machinery,
    • verify the contents of packaging,
    • identify parts for automated manufacturing.

Machine Vision Advantages:

    • Can operate 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year,
    • Do not suffer from fatigue or eye strain,
    • Are accurate and reliable,
    • Not restricted to reading printed symbols,
    • Are designed to perform repetative inspections,
    • Can be used to control other automated systems,
    • Can cost-effectively perform more inspections than human operators, and
    • Are not restricted to visible light.

Machine Vision Limitations:

    • Initial capital investment, and
    • Time and expertise required to set up and "train" system.
